The students designed a series of posters on the theme of “silk” to promote and raise awareness of the history, manufacturing process and fashion influence of silk. As well as aesthetically depicting the beauty and complexity of silk and its manufacturing process, they also encourage people to think about the importance of sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry.
Before they started designing the posters, they researched the history of silkworms together with the students, from the breeding of silkworms to the cultivation of mulberries, which are essential for the silkworms’ diet. The fascinating journey of silk from the cocoon to the end product in the fashion industry was shown. Special attention was also paid to sustainable and ethical practises in silk production. Based on the research findings, a creative strategy was developed that combines aesthetics and communication. The aim was to design visually appealing posters that convey the richness and diversity of the world of silk production, from the natural beauty of mulberry trees to the sophistication of silk fashion products. The students first made sketches, then transferred their ideas to the computer and designed four posters, each in the style of a particular historical design style (Art Nouveau, Art Deco, avant-garde movements and Polish poster).
Each poster was designed to stand alone and be part of a series with a common thematic and visual context. The project is an excellent example of how graphic design can be a powerful tool to convey important messages to society.
