The garment, designed for the exhibition Costume and Contemplation on Religion, explores spirituality, personal experience and textile heritage through religious and transcendent themes. It is inspired by threads overlapping in a cocoon and made from different types of silk. It symbolises the transformation of life, inner worlds and the memory of generations and reflects the Aracne Project’s mission to preserve the European silk tradition.

The model was designed on the basis of the Vilnius Academy of Art’s invitation to the exhibition of the second cycle of the Costume and Contemplation 2 trilogy. The exhibition “Costume and Contemplation on Religion” explores the relationship of the individual to transcendent reality. Through a narrative thread, it focuses on stories, religious events and experiences that have influenced the views and creative expressions of designers. The exhibition showcases various experiences related to spirituality. The works created especially for this exhibition reflect the artist’s personal relationship with the sacred and profane, experiences that are difficult to define. Presented are the creations of fashion design lecturers from Poland, Lithuania and Slovenia, who are associated with the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, the Academy of Arts in Vilnius and the University of Maribor.

The design challenge led to the idea of combining numerous areas that are incompatible at first glance, but through the prism of different influences and insights form a new creation.

Video of the model

The silhouette of the garment, the layering of the pieces and the transitions of colour tones in connection with silk materials and the textile heritage are shaped by personal stories about the experience of life and the transition from transcendental and personal reality.

The garment symbolises the integrity of life, interwoven across generations, passing on memories and the legacy of past generations. The outer silhouette of the garment resembles a cocoon that protects our inner world. Like a silkworm, individuals create our own reality, layer by layer we discover inner worlds and create a boundary between outer and inner reality. We are guided by trust and the power of a higher force that leads us to sincerity and love.

The noble silk thread symbolises a millennial tradition that carries the life and transformation of the silkworm, the journey from birth to death, the silk path from Asia to Europe, the devoted preservation from generation to generation. It supports the efforts of the Aracne project, which preserves the cultural route of silk through Europe and the renaissance of silk.
