Silk Shoppers

EVAlab – EVA social cooperative

Author: EVAlab team

Crafted by EVAlab – an ethical tailoring workshop empowering women survivors of violence managed by social cooperative EVA – these three versatile shoppers blend elegance and resilience. Designed in collaboration with the University of Maribor and handmade in Casal di Principe (Caserta, Italy), they feature exquisite San Leucio silk and Gucci-donated silk and other fabrics. Style meets strength in every stitch.

An elegant, compact shopper with a flat bottom, a practical internal pocket and handles that allow it to be carried like a real shoulder bag. For this shopper we chose a silk from San Leucio, usually used as a luxury furnishing fabric. The San Leucio silk mills were founded in the late 18th century  by King Ferdinand of Bourbon

in the surroundings of Caserta, where the magnificent Royal Palace had been built. The inner lining, which houses the pocket, is also made of silk, a gift from Gucci through Gucci Up, the project for the creative reuse of production surpluses for social purposes.

A four-season shopper bag that nods to outdoor living and fitness. Its standout feature? The handles – sewn along the full length of the bag’s sides. On the side that rests against the body, the stitching runs the entire edge of the handles. On the outer side, however, the handles are only partially attached. This clever loose space can easily hold a rolled-up towel for the beach or pool, a yoga mat, or even a light sweater or shawl for when temperatures drop.

The version created in the EVAlab workshop, during the training organised by the University of Maribor, adds yet another unique touch: it’s made of San Leucio silk, using both the front and back of the fabric!

This precious damask fabric presents a striking contrast between the outer side – typically adorned with elegant floral designs – and the inner side, where vibrant coloured threads weave into fascinating abstract patterns. In this shopper, the inner side of the San Leucio silk used for the bag is turned outward to create a decorative band offering an unexpected and eye-catching visual twist.

Silk Multifunctional Shopper 3

This multifunctional bag was developed during a training workshop held in June 2025 by the University of Maribor in collaboration with EVAlab, the ethical fashion atelier of the EVA social cooperative. Crafted from high-quality surplus fabrics – wool and iridescent silk shantung – generously donated by Gucci through the Gucci Up program, the shopper combines refined materials with thoughtful design.

Originally conceived by Prof. Sonja Šterman, the expandable tote bag gradually evolved into a versatile accessory: it converts into a backpack by applying the additional adjustable straps, and further transforms into an elegant balloon-shaped shoulder bag – compact, stylish, and adaptable to any occasion.
